What is an Au Pair?
An au pair is a young single person without dependants, between
the ages of 17-27 who comes to live as part of an English speaking
family to learn more about the English language and way of life.
The au pair will live as a member of the English speaking family
in exchange for looking after children and doing some light housework
e.g. vacuuming, dusting, using washing machine and helping with
the preparation of meals.
Regular au pairs work for five hours a day (25hrs per week) plus
up to two evenings a week baby-sitting and should have two full
days per week free time.
They should also be allowed to attend English classes if they wish
either during the day or in the evenings - normally two or three
lessons per week.
An au pair plus will work for up to 35hrs per week.
You will need to supply an equipped bedroom where an au pair can study
or just relax in comfort. But you also need to make sure that they
are treated as part of the family, and join in the social side as
well as the work side.
The au pair will be able to speak a basic level of English in order
to be able to converse with the family, and here at NHAP we only
register au pairs with an intermediate level of English, and their
stay can be from two months up to two years.
The au pair will be responsible for paying their own travel costs
to and from the UK as well as any school fees.
